Orange County Eye Project

801 N Tustin Avenue, Suite 200, Santa Ana, CA 92705

The Orange County Eye Project (OCEP) reached out to the Spanish Optometric Society to help recruit volunteers for their upcoming clinics.

OCEP provides free specialized eye care to underserved communities in Orange County and relies heavily on volunteers, with support from OCEP staff and an Eye Care Specialist (OD or MD) at each clinic.

Most patients at OCEP clinics are Spanish-speaking, making this a great opportunity to practice Spanish in a clinical setting

OCEP Clinics

OCEP clinics are led by a coordinator who explains the process, outlines clinic steps, and oversees operations. OCEP clinics are primarily held on Saturdays, with occasional weekday clinics based on provider availability. Clinics are half-day:

  • Morning: ~7:30 AM to 12:30 PM

  • Afternoon: ~11:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Each clinic serves ~25 referred patients from community clinics, academic institutions (including Ketchum Health), and private practices. Most patients come from underserved communities and are uninsured.

Volunteers are assigned to clinic stations (e.g., Intake & Vitals, Vision Testing, IOP, OCT, Scribing, Translation, Exit Counseling). Each station pairs experienced and new volunteers to allow hands-on learning. Patients arrive an hour before the provider and rotate through stations, where volunteers work together as a team to complete each activity.

If interested, please fill out an application form and email it to Rachel (info@retinaglobal.org) with the clinic date/time you are interested in and mention that you are an SCCO SOS member!

Please wear scrubs when volunteering and bring your SOS Spanish Booklet.
